Charlie and his wife have vowed to love and care for one another ‘til death do they part. But after ten years of caring for a brilliant husband whose mind is now confused, frustrated and childlike, Charlie’s wife finds herself in totally foreign territory. Charlie is hospitalized and his condition now mandates placement in the Memory Care Unit of a local skilled nursing facility.
With a sense of poignancy, passion and humor, Charlie’s wife gradually begins to understand the dynamics of the Memory Care Unit of the House in which her husband now resides. What she observes both stuns and amazes her. With a manner of trust toward staff and a personal motivation to provide the best life possible for Charlie, Charlie’s wife learns that family takes many different forms.
FLIES IN THE FAN is told from the viewpoint of three people, Charlie’s wife, Will’s wife and Annie’s husband. It is not a comfortable story. It is a real story, with raw emotions and vivid descriptions of a life that no one anticipates. Readers who dare to confront their personal feeling will find both a sense of wonder at the brave and adaptive residents and feelings of awe toward staff who daily provide a sense of community to those for which the society known to us has become a foreign environment.

Flies in the Fan edition by Dr Karen Hutchins Pirnot Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Very emotional and descriptive of what those who work in the care facility, what it must be like for the patient and what those that love the patients deal with. That author reveals we need to let go of the person that was and learn to interact with the person who is now. A wonderful read.
"Flies in the Fan" was a real "page turner." I was engrossed in the author's observations and how she "read" each resident, the emotions she had because of her deep love for her husband, the compassion and dedication of the caregivers, and the really helplessness but trust of the residents...plus their support for each other. The world of "the House" is unique, sobering, and dauntless.
Dr, Karen Pirnot in her latest book, Flies in the Fan, cuts open a rich vein of her own experience to provide some life-giving understanding for the journey through dementia. Her journey with ‘Charlie’ is something like looking into an infinity mirror; life is a mystery on so many different levels and she has expertly demystified and delineated those which will help those traveling a similar path, those that are professionally engaged in working with dementia, and those whose future will call them to be caregivers to those in their own families. She has shown that what is terrifying, heartbreaking, exhausting and self-defeating can also be something that is life enhancing and even sweet. This is a book that spares nothing, but is an easy read focusing on growth, tenderness and understanding. Thank you!

Transition from home to long term memory care is probably the most difficult decision a care giver will face. It is life changing for both the dementia patient and the caregiver.
Dr. Pirnot has written with heartfelt emotion, and is an inspiration to those who struggle to accept what now is, and what once was.
It is a tribute to the dedicated nurses and aides that are entrusted with the care of our loved ones; and a tribute to those who reside in the House..they now call home.
The Q&A section at the back of the book is especially noteworthy.
I was asked to serve as a beta reader for Flies in the Fan and agreed only because I already was familiar with some of Dr. Pirnot’s other works and knew her to be a skilled writer. But I did so with some trepidation as I surmised it would be a heart rendering experience. In many ways it was, but once I opened this book and entered THE HOUSE, (residence to its dementia patients), I was transfixed. The House is written in upper case letters to personify the memory care unit of one facility which quickly takes on a personality all its own. One sees that this is hardly a glitzy place, nor one decorated with eye-appeal. Instead it is a functional facility staffed by caring and intuitive people who skillfully interact with their residents.
We see what really counts in selecting a memory care facility as we watch Anita gently lead one resident away before he steals juice from another resident’s tray, simply by holding his hands while singing to him. We watch Bonnie drop a tablecloth in the center of each dining table to engage residents in smoothing out the linens, at the same time soothing away the agitation many residents feel as they wait for their food. What lingers in our minds is the notion that the cared for should be cared about . . . that one must look beyond the trappings of the facility to the quality of the care.
There are poignant moments such as the Valentines Day dance staged by staff members for their residents. There are heartbreaking moments as when a visiting spouse recalls the intimacies she and her husband once shared through dance, another aspect to a relationship lost to them now. Dr. Pirnot gives us other powerful lessons as how to look beneath the jumbled words of the resident to decipher what that loved one is trying to express.
And then we get to the final release, when Charlie’s wife gives him final permission to let go. I dare anyone to remain dry eyed through these final chapters. I know I could not.
This is a book with a heart and soul - a must read for every health care provider, but also a book to heighten the conscience of the rest of us.
